GarageGames on Monday announced the release of Torque Game Builder (TGB) 1.5, a new version of its 2D game development engine for Mac OS X, Windows and Xbox 360. A free update to registered users, TGB is priced from $100 to $1,250 (different licenses are offered for “indie” and commercial developers, and standard and “pro” editions are available).
Torque Game Builder is described as “professional game making for everyone.” GarageGames claims it is suitable for beginning programmers, modders, intermediate and expert programmers who want to make 2D games. The software includes controls for sprites, scrolling backgrounds, simple 3D objects, networking, physics and collision detection.
New to the 1.5 release is the addition of the new “Behaviors” system. With Behaviors, developers can attach functionality to specific game objects to define how those objects will react to certain in-game events. A new BehaviorPlayground project has been added so you can see this functionality in use.
Other new features include tick-based physics, better platform support, bug fixes and other enhancements.
System requirements call for a G4 or better, 512MB RAM, Mac OS X v10.3 or later and Nvidia or ATI-accelerated 3D graphics. A 30-day trial version is available for download.
