TOO BUSY: Sir Ian McKellen has turned down the opportunity for a guest spot on Shortland Street.
British actor Sir Ian McKellen has turned down the chance to appear in hit Kiwi television soap Shortland Street.
Sir Ian, who has been in New Zealand with the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of King Lear and The Seagull, was offered a small role in the soap opera - possibly as a nurse or hospital cleaner.
However, the Royal Shakespeare Company's publicist in New Zealand Sally Woodfield told The New Zealand Herald "due to the timeframe he was unable to do it".
"In the time he had off here he had particular people he wanted to catch up with."
Sir Ian had lunch with Sir Edmund Hillary and caught up with film director Peter Jackson with whom he worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
