FIVE ALIVE: Opshop are up for five awards at this year's New Zealand Music Awards.
Rock bands Opshop and Evermore have been named as finalists in five categories at this year's Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Opshop's latest album, Second Hand Planet, and single, Maybe, are nominated as album and single of the year, and the band is also up for the people's choice award, best group and best rock album.

The evening will be a battle of North Island versus South, with Fielding rock group Evermore named in the same categories.

However, the five nominations have spoilt the plans of lead singer Jason Kerrison "to bail early and get some dinner at the food court".

"We are pretty stunned really, and elated," the 28-year-old singer said.

"The company we are keeping is unreal, so I'm really stoked," he said.

Kerrison and fellow Cantabrians Bobby Kennedy, Matt Treacy and Clint Harris, who make up Opshop, are now hoping for the honour of playing at the awards ceremony at Auckland's ASB Theatre on October 18.

Hollie Smith and Brooke Fraser each scored four nominations. The Mint Chicks and Liam Finn were nominated in three categories while Shapeshifter and the Black Seeds had two nominations.

Evermore, Brooke Fraser, Opshop, The Black Seeds and Shapeshifter were also nominated for the people's choice award which is voted on by the public via text message.

"The finalists this year come from a strong and broad stable of Kiwi artists producing great music," said awards spokesman Campbell Smith.

Also announced at Wednesday night's event was the first ever recipient of the Legacy Award, 'New Zealand's Elvis' Johnny Devlin.

The 42nd annual awards ceremony takes place at Auckland's Aotea Centre on October 18.
