Wilson Perry III, 19, allegedly stole a woman's bag outside the Christmas Tree Shops Wednesday night, police said.
HYANNIS, Mass. (CBS) ― The man accused of stealing a woman's purse in Hyannis should have checked his getaway plan before going through with the alleged robbery.
Wilson Perry III, 19, allegedly stole a woman's bag outside the Christmas Tree Shops Wednesday night, police said.
According to officials, Perry was able to shake off his victim, but what he was not able to escape was the very low fuel level in his alleged getaway truck.
After allegedly snatching the victim's purse, police say Perry jumped into a red pickup truck, driven by Nikita Demello-Eddy, 20, of Hyannis. Both got away, but according to police, that same truck was spotted on the side of the road with an empty fuel tank only a few minutes later.
When police responded to the truck, they allegedly saw the stolen purse in the front seat. Eddy, who was sitting in the driver seat, told police Perry had walked to the nearest gas station to get some gas.
While one officer stayed with Eddy, a second officer found Perry walking back to the truck with a gas can, police said. The officer allegedly approached Perry and offered him a ride, which he accepted.
Once the officer and Perry returned to the truck, he was taken into custody, police said. The purse owner identified Perry as the suspect, and he was then arrested and charged with unarmed robbery.
Perry is now being held on $1,000 cash bail and will be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Thursday.
