COMING TO AMERICA: Film star Eddie Murphy and his partner Tracey Edmonds are reportedly heading back to the altar in the US after revelations their recent wedding in French Polynesia was probably invalid.
Film star Eddie Murphy and his partner Tracey Edmonds will remarry in the US after revelations their recent wedding in French Polynesia was probably invalid.
People magazine has quoted representatives of the couple who said Murphy and Edmonds will tie the knot again -- this time in America.
"As is typical when couples get married in foreign countries, a legal ceremony will take place when they return to the US," the magazine reported.
AAP last week quoted French Polynesian lawyer Malgras Benoit who said Murphy and his 40-year-old fiancee Edmonds were ineligible to be married locally because they had not lived in the region long enough.
Under French law, people wishing to marry must reside near where the ceremony is to take place for at least 30 days before they can legally tie the knot.
"A marriage on the beach would be like ... a fake marriage. It's not a real marriage, if it is on the beach with only a local priest," he said. "I think it was just an exotic, artistic 'marriage'."
"You need to have residence for at least 30 days -- one month in the island of Bora Bora for instance -- and this has not been the case," Benoit said.
It was earlier reported that Murphy and Edmonds arrived in French Polynesia by private jet in late December and were married on New Year's day on a small islet near Bora Bora Island, a playground for
wealthy tourists.
They had a sunset ceremony on the beach in front of 25 family and friends.
Edmonds reportedly walked barefoot down the aisle to Gladys Knight's song Makings of You and a gazebo made from 6,000 shells was built for the event
