IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL: Kylie Minogue says her battle with cancer may never be over.
Kylie Minogue says she fears her battle with breast cancer is not over, but still dreams of marrying and having children.

On the eve of her 40th birthday next month, the Australian pop princess says she still has regular check-ups with her doctors and has been touched by the kindness her fans have shown.

"It's not over," she told the Sunday Mirror newspaper in Britain.

"The 'voyage' doesn't end suddenly. That's why it's so difficult to talk about it.

"I remember one day in Paris during my treatment when I was in a cafe on a corner - and at the time I was really glad if I could make it as far as there.

"A young man approached me and gave me a rose. He said simply: 'Be brave. We're thinking of you'."

Minogue, who suddenly postponed her 2005 Showgirl tour after being diagnosed with cancer, said at the time some of her entourage warned her against revealing she was ill in case it harmed her career.

"I'd be lying if I said all of my management were in agreement," she said.

"It's wonderful to know that in talking about it, I'm perhaps helping women, families and also some men with breast cancer."

But it was her dream of performing on stage one day that kept the petite singer battling on against cancer.

"It was always my goal throughout this challenge," she said.

"Returning to the stage signified returning to a normal life. There's also a song called Stars which says that 'the stars don't just shine in one place'. I wanted to say that because even in the darkest moments, there's always beauty and light.

"When I was in hospital with people I'd never met who had my life in their hands, we were able to laugh together, even in terrifying situations."

Minogue so far has no major plans to celebrate her birthday and says she views the landmark date in a positive way.

"I refuse to view ageing as declining because I know my life is better now," she said.

However while Minogue appears to have conquered cancer, she is still yet to achieve her dream of marriage and children.

She even admits that one of her regrets is having sung one of her greatest hits - I Should Be So Lucky - because people think she has been unlucky in love.

"It's frustrating because it's not completely true," she said.

"I have been lucky."

Minogue, who split with French actor Olivier Martinez last year, also told Paris Match magazine she still loved the idea of having a family but did not need to be a mother to feel completely fulfilled in her life.

"It's a difficult question, because it's not as easy as that," she told the magazine.

"If it happens, it will be marvellous. I love the idea of a family. But I won't tell myself that I absolutely have to have children to make my life complete."
