NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI is not the first pontiff to visit the United States, but he is the first to have his life story told by a cat in a children's book.

"Joseph and Chico: The Life of Pope Benedict XVI as Told by a Cat" was written by an Italian journalist from the perspective of a cat that lives across the street from the pope's home in Germany, The New York Times reported Monday.

The book, which has already sold 12,000 copies in the United States and has been translated into 10 languages, tells of the love for all animals, especially cats, of Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope.

Chico's owner, Rupert Hofbauer, says the 10-year-old cat misses his old friend who has not been back to the Bavarian village of Pentling since becoming head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The pope's house in Germany was filled with cats when he lived there before being posted to the Vatican in 1982, the newspaper said..
