Rocker MORRISSEY has donated GBP75,000 to an anti-racism music festival to prevent the London event from being scrapped.

Organisers of Sunday's (27Apr08) Rock Against Racism concert faced the possibility of cancelling the show altogether after the event's main sponsors pulled out - leaving them with a GBP75,000 deficit.

But the former The Smiths frontman stepped forward to save the day, by encouraging his management team, promoters and his booking agency to donate to the "historic event" and make up the lost cash.

He praised the Rock Against Racism's "important, anti-racist message" and said the gig "must be allowed to go ahead."

He added, "This is something I am committed to and we appreciate everyone coming together so quickly to make it happen."

After learning the concert will be able to go ahead after all, organisers Martin Smith and Lee Billingham said: "We're extremely grateful for Morrissey's generous financial contribution."
The one-day event is currently taking place at London's Victoria Park with acts including rockers The Good The Bad + The Queen, Hard-Fi and The View.
