US TV hit Ugly Betty was the big winner at this year's (08) ALMA awards - scooping four of the ceremony's most prestigious gongs.

The ALMA Awards, which took place on Sunday (17Aug08) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles, celebrates the artistic achievements of Latinos in the entertainment industry.

America Ferrera, who plays the title role in Ugly Betty, won the award for Outstanding Actress in a TV Series, while her on-set sister, Ana Ortiz, scooped the gong for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role.

The popular ABC show also landed the Outstanding TV Series award, as well as a nod for the series' scriptwriter, Silvio Horta.

The Outstanding Actor Award was split, with judges failing to decide between Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos and Michael Peña for Walkout, with both receiving the honour.

In the movie category, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's Babel was voted the Outstanding Motion Picture, with the film's supporting star, Adriana Gonzalez, taking home the Outstanding Actress award.

Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture went to Jesse Garcia for his role in 2006's moving family drama Quinceañera.

The event attracted a host of hot Latino stars, including Eva Longoria Parker, Jessica Alba, and Disney sensation Selena Gomez.

The show will be broadcast in the US on 12 September (08) on American network ABC.
