Soul band Booker T & the MGs are among the latest inductees to the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee.
Best remembered as the studio band for Stax-Volt Records during the 1960s, the group played on such classic hits as Dock of the Bay and Soul Man.
The reputation as a band in their own right was established in 1962 with their instrumental hit Green Onions.
Others inducted include the Memphis Horns, Peter Gunn guitarist Duane Eddy and Buddy Holly's band the Crickets.
Rolling Stone member Keith Richards was on hand to perform with the latter, saying his group would "probably" never have been formed had they not existed.
"Here was a unit that could operate together and it turned us all on," said the guitarist as he joined them on Holly hit Not Fade Away.
'Honour above honour'
"Without them we would be nowhere. The whole idea of any of us anywhere else sprung from this idea of these guys we loved."
Eddy called his induction an "honour above honour". "All of the wives of the musicians are happy because now they have a place to put their old junk," he joked.
Keyboardist Booker T Jones was joined by guitarist Steve Cropper and bass player Donald "Duck" Dunn at Tuesday's induction ceremony, held at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville.
