The movie stars Haley Bennett as troubled teenager Hartley who finds terror at her new school.

The makers of comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno say the film faced some audience resistance over its racy subject matter and the word "porno" in the title.

"I would anecdotally speculate that that hurt us," said Steve Bunnell, head of distribution for Weinstein.

He admitted the company had experienced trouble placing adverts because of the movie's title.

"We were surprised that we ended up with the controversy. We thought everybody in America would understand that it was a joke."

In sixth place was family film Beverley Hills Chihuahua, followed by The Secret Life of Bees.

Max Payne, starring Mark Wahlberg, was eighth, with Eagle Eye at number nine and Pride and Glory rounding off the top 10.
