- Robert sent the following: I found an article online about 5 Sports Leagues that didn’t make it. Of course you can’t mention failed leagues without mentioning Vince McMahon and the XFL. He’s in esteemed company with such leagues as Roller Hockey International and the National Bowling League. They do mention the XFL’s use of the Skycam which of course is now used in most NFL and College games. It’s an interesting article and it’s here.
- The Men’s Anti-Violence Council will be screening the film “Wrestling with Manhood: Boys, Bullying and Battering” at on 12/3 as part of their White Ribbon Campaign at the Iowa Memorial Union. A press release for the event reads, “The film “Wrestling with Manhood” is the first educational program to pay attention to the enormous popularity of professional wrestling among male youth, addressing its relationship to real-life violence and probing the social values that sustain it as a powerful cultural force. Sut Jhally and Jackson Katz — the award-winning creators of the videos “Dreamworlds” and “Tough Guise,” respectively — explore the enduring problems of men’s violence against women and bullying in schools. Drawing the connection between professional wrestling and the construction of contemporary masculinity, they show how so-called “entertainment” is related to homophobia, sexual assault and relationship violence.”
- WWE was listed as the second most searched term for Yahoo in 2008, with only Britney Spears topping the company.
- From Marco Tyssen: In an official statement today, German pay-tv provider Premiere stated on its official website (premiere.de/wrestling, then go to WWE) that WWE programming will no longer be showing for the first time since Dec. 2002 starting next week. WWE and Premiere are still working on a new tv deal, but didn’t come to terms yet. As reported a couple of weeks ago on Wrestling-Revolution.de, Premiere wants to offer the German fans a much better WWE programming. This would include the complete RAW episodes (for the last 6 years Premiere just showed the 1 hour international edition of RAW on a delay of eight days). First plans saw the first complete WWE RAW episode with (a probably 2 1/2 day delay) on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 11 pm. Plans on the new deal also included the weekly show WWE Experience, in kind of a switch against WWE Bottom Line. As it seems for now, both sites aren’t close to reach a new deal. This also means that Premiere will not broadcast the WWE Armageddon 2008 PPV live on it’s pay-per-view channels “Premiere Direkt” (WWE PPV’s each cost 15€). For the last 6 years Premiere gave WWE a guaranteed tv-platform after World Wrestling Entertainment had a rollercoaster ride on German free-TV with a lot of up and downs, including a 2 years absence on German television. Premiere broadcasts 5 weekly WWE shows (RAW in its international cut version, ECW, Bottom Line, Afterburn and Vintage Collection with a one week delay) and PPV-events live ever since Great American Bash 2007. Before that time, WWE showed their PPV-events with a one hour delay on PPV. They also broadcast the complete TNA iMPACT! episodes and TNA PPV’s live. Of course there still is a lot of hope for the German fans that both parties come to terms of a new deal. Premiere has tried to reach better deals.
