ONE of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's defence lawyers has been gunned down in Baghdad, Iraqi police said today.
Khamis al-Obaidi was kidnapped and shot dead in Baghdad and his body was found in the capital, police said.
"The police found the corpse of Obeidi tossed in the 'Good Morning' roundabout in the Ur neighborhood" of Baghdad's mainly Sunni Adhamiyah district, an interior ministry official said.
Obeidi is the third defence lawyer for Saddam to be killed since his trial for crimes against humanity opened in October.
The killing comes two days after the chief prosecutor demanded a death penalty for Saddam and three of his former top aides for their roles in a crackdown on Shi'ite villagers following a 1982 attempt on the ousted leader's life.Last year, a dozen masked gunmen abducted Saddam's defence lawyer Saadoun al-Janabi from his Baghdad office the day after the trial's opening session in October. His body was found the next day with two bullets in his skull.
Nearly three weeks later, defence lawyer Adel al-Zubeidi was killed in a daylight ambush in Baghdad.
