Gardaí in Cork have begun a murder investigation after a man was stabbed earlier this morning.

The man was in his late 20s and from the north side of the city.

Gardaí were called to the scene at Friar's Walk on the south side of Cork City at around 6.30am this morning.
They were alerted by ambulance control, after emergency medics went to the assistance of a man who had been stabbed. He was removed with serious injuries to Cork University Hospital.

Efforts to save the man's life were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at around 8am.

Gardaí are trying to establish how he got to Friar's Walk on the south side of the city and what he was doing there.

They have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Anglesea Street garda station at 021-4522000.

In the meantime two scenes have been sealed off at a house and on the street at Friar's Walk and these are being examined by scene of crime investigators.

The State Pathologist's Office has also been informed and a post mortem examination on the dead man's body will be conducted later.
