A woman and a teenage girl were killed in a suspicious fire at a flat, police said.
They were discovered by firefighters tackling a blaze at Cyprus Street, Bethnal Green, east London in the early hours of Sunday.
The fifth floor of seven-storey Malmesbury House was left badly damaged, Scotland Yard said.
Police are waiting to formally identify the victims and inform all next of kin.
London Fire Brigade said they were alerted to the blaze at 5.45am and the victims were found in the rear bedroom of the fifth-floor flat.
A spokesman said 50% of the five-bedroom flat was damaged.
Neighbours had already evacuated the building when emergency services arrived.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "At this stage the fire is being treated as suspicious."
No arrests have been made.
Police appealed for witnesses to call the incident room on 020 8345 1585 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
