Over the past week World Wrestling Entertainment has gone on another string of talent releases. Usually WWE goes on a big talent release binge usually right after WrestleMania so perhaps they are getting a sad early start.
On Wednesday, March 4, The Boogeyman (Marty Wright) was released after a quick loss to Kane on last week’s ECW telecast.
Wright entered tryouts for the fourth season of the WWE-produced reality show “Tough Enough.” He made to the fifty man, two day final tryout but then admitted he was 40 years-old, which was well past the 35 year old age limit for the competition. Despite him lying about his age he was eventually given a developmental contract because of his look, size and passion.
He was given the gimmick of “The Boogeyman,” where he played an actor who was supposed to play the character of “Boogeyman” in a UPN television show, but the show was cancelled and he was transferred to Friday Night SmackDown, another show also on UPN at the time. I wish I was making that back story up.
He was released in the summer of 2006 but was hired back a week later because he was commanding ridiculous money on the independent circuit. Apparently he has some rights to the Boogeyman moniker and gimmick so he’ll be showing up at an armory near you with the same schtick. I read somewhere this past week in all this time he was on the roster he only had something like 33 televised matches. Well worth the investment.
Also last week, Ryan Braddock was released. He had been with WWE since 2005 and was a hot prospect in both WWE's former developmental territories, Ohio Valley Wrestling and Deep South Wrestling, wrestling as “Bradley Jay” and “Jay Bradley” but for some reason he never got any traction on TV.
I always kind of liked Braddock and was kind of disappointed that he didn’t get any sort of push on TV. He had the kind of look that WWE usually goes for. Maybe he’ll get another chance down the road sometime. He’s the type of young guy TNA should actually be looking to scoop from WWE and invest into becoming a re-branded young homegrown talent like they did with Matt Morgan and Sheik Abdul Bashir.
Creative team member John Carle has also been released from the company. Apparently this was more of a cost-cutting measure more than anything else.
The releases kept coming last week as developmental talent Patrick Brink, who wrestled as Kaleb O’Neal, was released. Apparently he had a string of things that led to his release, including showing up to the Florida Championship Wrestling developmental territory out of shape, getting some unauthorized tattoo work and then being late to some of his rehabilitation.
The company also released legendary Hall of Famer Afa Anoi’a from his position working in a consultant’s role, where he recommended talent to be signed. Despite the release he is still one good terms with WWE as VP, Talent Relations John Laurinaitis is still scheduled to attend a training camp at Afa’s school in June. Afa has gone on to train many successful pro wrestlers and was one of the men who helped Mickey Rourke get into shape for ‘The Wrestler.’ He joins his son, who wrestled as Manu, who was released in late February.
To add to the recently departed, yesterday, March 9, wwe.com announced that Kizarny (Nick Cvjetkovich) has been released. Kizarny was a journeyman who has been wrestling since 2000 and signed with WWE in 2007. He was called up from the developmental leagues in late 2008 with a crazed carnival worker gimmick who spoke in a old language called “carney.” Unfortunately management wasn’t impressed with him once he actually stepped in the ring and his initial momentum was stalled almost immediately.
Kizarny’s last blog on the WWE Universe (which has already been removed by WWE) was about his plan to get WWE boss Vince McMahon to dress as Doink the Clown so they could go after the Tag Team Championships.
Was he just acting for his release with a comment like that?
