A USED couch in the US came with one very unexpected feature, a live-in and very much alive cat.
Vickie Mendenhall bought the couch $US27 ($41) and placed it in her home in Spokane, Washington, Associated Press reports.
However she and her boyfriend, Chris Lund, were puzzled by a disembodied mewing, according to the Spokesman-Review.
After some days Mr Lund finally worked out the noise was coming from below the couch cushions he was sitting on while watching TV.
So he pulled out and lifted up the couch to find the hungry cat that had crawled into the furniture through a small hole underneath.
After failing to find out from the store who the previous owner of the couch was, Ms Mendenhall took the calico cat to the animal shelter she works at.
After the story gained exposure in local media Bob Killion, who had donated the couch but then discovered he was missing a pet, claimed the cat, who is named Callie.
