All three crew of the Beechcraft propeller plane were killed in the crash - a major, captain and sergeant - as well as two civilians on board the plane and two on the ground.

The plane collided with a five-storey residential building in a densely-populated part of the Andean mountain city - killing a female resident and at least one other person.

It narrowly avoided hitting the residence of the US ambassador to Ecuador, who is reportedly unharmed.

The two civilians killed aboard the plane are thought to be the pilot's wife and son.

Two other civilians were hurt in the crash, which set the building ablaze and prompted a major search and rescue operation.

The plane's crew had been taking part in a training operation.

Eyewitnesses reported black smoke billowing out of the building on impact.

The area has been the scene of at least four plane incidents in recent years.

In 1992 a military plane slammed into a building, killing the then-commander of the army, Carlomagno Andrade.

That same year, a similar accident killed Ecuador's tourism minister, Pedro Zambrano.
