"They give the slogan of change but in practice no change is seen," Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech.

"What is the change in your policy? Did you remove the sanctions? Did you stop supporting the Zionist regime? Tell us what you have changed."

Mr Khamenei went on: "We have no experience with the new American government and the new American president.

"We will observe them and we will judge. If you change your attitude, we will change our attitude."

The supreme leader's remarks come just a day after President Obama sent a historic online video message marking the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.

In the recording, the US president said: "For nearly three decades, relations between our nations have been strained.

"But at this holiday, we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together."

It was the latest step from the White House as it attempts to entice Iran to engage in dialogue and resolve decades of mutual animosity.
