It didn’t take Christian long to complete his comeback. After being away from WWE for more than three years, Captain Charisma returned in February and, one month later, is ready to make waves at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.
On March 10, the ECW Superstar won a Tri-Branded 16-Man Battle Royal to qualify for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match where he will compete with seven other participants to earn the championship opportunity of his choosing.
“I’ve been in so many Ladder Matches, it feels like second nature to me,” Christian told WWE.com. “I feel like I’m one of the guys who put this match on the map.”
The returning Superstar quite literally helped to make the contest what it is, taking part in the first-ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 21. For most of his career, ladders have been a specialty of his, helping Christian to gain notoriety as a fearless personality when it comes to this type of stipulation. In fact, Christian obtained his first-ever WWE Tag Team Championship along with Edge by winning a Triple Threat Ladder Match at WrestleMania 2000.
“Sometimes afterward, you realize something bad really can happen,” Christian admitted. “But when you’re out there and the adrenaline is pumping and the crowd’s going crazy, you don’t think about it. Instinct takes over.”
Despite his trademark fearlessness, a Money in the Bank Ladder Match victory is something that has eluded him. Still, that only makes Captain Charisma more dangerous, as the epitome of a man who puts his desire before his personal well-being.
During a Steel Cage Match in 2004, Christian suffered a lower back injury. When the bell rings, however, he has a short memory, not allowing the fear of aggravating it get in the way. In the five years since, he hasn’t experienced any further problems.
To say Christian has returned with a bang is an understatement. He has made life difficult for ECW Champion Jack Swagger in his new home, the Land of the Extreme, and Captain Charisma ousted 15 other hungry Superstars for the opportunity to be at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.
“I’ve been away from WWE for a few years now, and I’m refocused, rededicated and back to make a huge impact. I came back for one reason,” he said. “To become a champion.”
The three-time Intercontinental Champion, nine-time World Tag Team Champion, one-time European Champion, former Hardcore Champion and ex-Light Heavyweight Champion knows a thing or two about winning titles. Still, despite his impressive résumé, he admits this match means more than any other he’s been in, especially when everyone who has obtained the coveted briefcase has gone on to cash it in for a championship.
“Of all the Ladder Matches and Money in the Bank Matches this one has the biggest prize for me,” he explained. “That’s the one title that’s eluded me my entire career: A World Title.”
