A group of Chicago residents say they filled 15 potholes in neighborhood roads since city construction crews apparently had better things to do.

Elce Redmond of the South Austin Coalition said after fruitlessly waiting for city workers to come to fill in blocks of massive potholes, group members took care of the road repairs themselves, the Chicago Tribune said Thursday.

"The city's not doing it, so residents need to take the matter into their own hands," Redmond said.

While a Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman opposed the civilian repair efforts, at least one resident said such tactics were entirely necessary.

"The city should be taking care of these potholes instead of planning for the Olympics," 66-year-old West Side resident Shelby Calpin told the Tribune, referring to Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Meanwhile, Chicago Transportation Commissioner Tom Byrne wants to alter construction plans to fix the city's numerous potholes, the Chicago Sun-Times said.

"Instead of putting one crew of four out there, I'm looking at putting two crews together in high-density areas," Byrne said of the new repair plan.
