The title situation and ECW show tonight is most likely a complete mess. There is no doubt that WWE did not plan on RVD losing his title(s) last night. While he still held onto the ECW Championship, he lost the WWE Championship to Edge. The most telling sign that RVD was not supposed to lose the title last night is on ECW.com where they still have a BIG advertisement that states:
Extreme Rules Match: For the ECW & WWE Championships with a photo of Edge & RVD.
So obviously, with tonight being ECW's one big shot at running solo and in one of their largest markets, WWE had planned on RVD being put over strong. Also, you will notice that there was no mention of Sabu last night on WWE. Just another indication of how WWE has already possibly hit the panic button when it comes to these two. They have however, updated ECW.com with the news of the arrests of both RVD and Sabu and have added a short blob about Edge winning the title last night that reads the following:
During the Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship on RAW, John Cena hit RVD with an FU and appeared to be on his way to winning gold. However, Edge nailed Cena with the WWE Championship belt and then covered the already fallen RVD for the victory.
The Preview for tonight still reads that Edge will face RVD For the WWE & ECW Titles. I guess you could assume that RVD vs Edge is still on for tonight with each one of them putting up their belts - that way WWE doesn't have to backtrack from the Main Event they have been advertising for over a week.
However, with all of this going on, you better believe WWE is being very cautious with both Sabu and RVD. WWE won't be able to accord any special treatment to the two superstars and may have to set an example with the both of them that they are not going to allow drugs into their locker room. It will be interesting to see what happens, but you better believe that ECW is hanging by a lifeline right now with Sabu and RVD's futures in the balance. Without those two, ECW is void of any major superstar while Kurt Angle is away on hiatus. Added to that, ECW would be without any true "ECW Original" leader. In the end, it may not be Vince McMahon that brought ECW down, but two of it's very own for their stupidity this past weekend.
