For those that have asked, 12 Rounds, starring John Cena, has pretty much dropped off the radar for sites like BoxOfficeMojo.com, as it is now being carried in very few theatres at all this weekend. The film ran for two weekends on 2,000 screens, then dropped to 908 last weekend. Going into this weekend, the film had pulled in $11,066,551 in North America, and another $1,645,691 in overseas markets, putting it at $12,712,242 total.
By comparison Cena's last film, The Marine, had pulled in $15,440,515 after it's third weekend in theatres and grabbed another $1.5 million in it's fourth weekend on its way to being WWE Films most successful project to date..
Counting domestic and foreign grosses, here is how the four WWE Films theatrical efforts currently stack up:
1. The Marine, starring John Cena: $22,165,608.
2. See No Evil, starring Kane: $18,420,968.
3. 12 Rounds, starring John Cena: $12,717,242 (estimated gross).
4. The Condemned, starring Steve Austin: $8,635,183.
So, does making almost $13 million dollars make the movie profitable? WWE Fims has not publicly released the production budget for the film, nor do we know how much was spent on advertising, so we won't know for sure until WWE shares the information with their shareholders. Most film industry publications have referred to it as being a "bomb" and criticized the advertising campaign for not giving more insight into the film. Given the number of mainstream appearances John Cena made to promote the movie (appearances many felt were done at the expense of not pushing Wrestlemania more) WWE has to be dissatisfied with the number.
The next step for 12 Rounds is to hopefully pull in good numbers on a DVD release.
