WWE SmackDown/ECW Live Results
May 30th, 2009 - Chattanooga, TN
Report by Robby O'Daniel, F4Wonline.com
Lots of people in attendance, though the upper deck was mostly empty. Mostly adults and children. Mostly Jeff Hardy fans. It was hard not to see a kid with Jeff Hardy sleeves.
Justin Roberts opened the show by welcoming everybody and asking us to stand for the national anthem.
The Great Khali defeated Dolph Ziggler with the Khali bomb. He hit the KHALI CHOP~! to set it up. Khali got a great reaction, being the first person out on the show. Dolph did a ton of stalling when he showed up, including staying outside for a 9 count, sliding in and going back outside. Dolph picked fights with fans outside as well. When Khali first hit Dolph, the crowd erupted.
Tiffany was in the upper deck and asked a fan what the name of the next PPV was. He said Extreme Rules, and they were bumped up to better seats.
Drew McIntyre beat Jimmy Wang Yang with a neckbreaker. Crowd didn't know who McIntrye was, obviously. McIntyre cut a promo about how he was Scottish. The crowd starting yelling WHAT? back at him (thankfully the only time in the show this happened). McIntyre got upset, saying the crowd was only doing it because of his accent. Yang got a good reaction since it was the South.
Evan Bourne beat Tyson Kidd with the shooting star press. The Hart Dynasty (Kidd, Natalya and DH Smith) came out, with Natalya getting on the mic and introducing all three in detail. Natalya got a lot of heat for this. When Bourne came out, Smith ambushed him, which caused Tiffany to eject Natalya and Smith. Bourne and Kidd then had the match they've been having on TV. After the match, Smith again nailed Bourne, with the Harts leaving triumphant.
CM Punk beat Umaga with a rollup. Punk got one of the best reactions of the night. Umaga was mostly cheered when he came out, received half cheers during the match and finally was booed and mocked after the match. Punk's face as Umaga was going for his splash in the corner was priceless. He looked scared to death. Umaga gestured for the THUMB OF DOOM~! but Punk countered. Punk tried for the GTS but failed. As Umaga went for another splash in the corner, Punk countered and got the rollup for the win. Crowd popped big for the Punk victory.
Christian & Tommy Dreamer beat Jack Swagger & Mark Henry when Christian hit a top-rope headbutt on Henry and pinned him. This four played to the crowd more than anyone else on the card. Swagger got a sign from the crowd that said THE WORLD COULD USE A LITTLE MORE SWAGGER and strolled around the ring, holding it up. Christian jokingly pushed Dreamer into the ring, with Dreamer laughing. When the two were on the turnbuckle and gesturing for the crowd, Dreamer did his dorky dance that he did on Tuesday (Val Venis-esque dance). Christian pointed to himself. The crowd cheered. Christian pointed to Swagger. The crowd booed. He then took off his shirt, to which all the ladies in the audience went BONKERS~! and he gestured for what seemed like forever to see whether any of the crowd wanted it. To put it mildly, they did. Swagger & Henry STOLE the shirt, with Henry spitting on it and Swagger wiping his armpit with it. Henry ripped it up, and Swagger put some of the shirt on his thigh, wrapped around. This also played into the match later as, as the referee was distracted, Swagger used it to choke. Lots of mat wrestling between Swagger and Christian with the heel team getting the heat on Christian before Tommy got the hot tag. All four went crazy with moves everywhere before the finish. Good match.
Just before intermission (what an opportune time!), Justin Roberts said that Jeff Hardy signed some plaques and they were limited availability at the merchandise stand. Then all the Jeff Hardy fans went back to get one.
About 10 minute intermission.
Melina & Gail Kim beat Natalya & Alicia Fox when Melina hit her dangerous, easily botched flip finisher. Stalling at the beginning with Melina & Gail Kim gesturing to the crowd and getting cheered, while the heels got booed.
John Morrison beat Chris Jericho with Starship Pain in the best match of the night. Jericho came out and just stared at the audience for a while, while the audience booed him out of the building. Jericho then got on the mic and said the fans in Chattanooga were losers, they never accomplished anything. They weren't like Chris Jericho, 2008 Superstar of the Year, the best at his chosen profession, and they never would be like Jericho. Morrison came out to cheers. Jericho got on the mic again and said Morrison was a loser, just like the fans. More heat for Jericho. Jericho kicked the steps and flung a chair in frustration outside the ring. Finally the two locked up and battled. At one point, Jericho went for the Lionsault and missed. When Morrison went for his second rope enziguri, Jericho grabbed one of his legs and countered into the Walls of Jericho. Morrison countered out of it into a cradle that the crowd bought as the finish but it wasn't the finish. Finally Morrison set up Jericho for Starship Pain.
Edge beat Jeff Hardy with a spear to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. Jeff came out to the biggest pop of the night by far. There were so many flashbulbs going off when Jeff got on the turnbuckles that it was enough to blind a person. Well not quite but almost. Edge came out, and he said he was going to do Jeff a favor. He knew that Jeff needed five stitches from what Edge did to Jeff's eye on Friday night. He knew that Jeff received a concussion from the top-rope Edgecution Jeff received from Edge at Judgment Day. So Edge said, don't let these fans talk you into doing something you'll regret for the rest of your life. We don't have to have the match. Jeff said maybe Edge was right. Then he kicked him and foolishly went ahead with the match after Edge had shown all that compassion. Jeff kicked out of an Edgecution. Edge kicked out of a whisper in the wind. While Jeff was outside and the referee was distracted, Edge took off the turnbuckle pad to one of the turnbuckles. Finally Edge lowered Jeff into it and came off the ropes for a spear for the win. The crowd was sent home happy, though. Edge, after the match, gestured that he was going to hit Jeff with the title but Jeff countered and hit the Swanton Bomb on Edge from atop the exposed turnbuckle.
