Jane Andrews, 42, was recaptured by police in Maidstone after escaping from East Sutton Park open prison just a few miles away on Sunday evening.

The convicted murderer was jailed for life in 2001 for bludgeoning and stabbing her boyfriend Tom Cressman to death when he refused to marry her.

She allegedly attempted suicide last week.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said Andrews was found with her elderly parents and brother at the Premier Inn near Maidstone at around 3am.

Her parents had been staying in the room next to hers with her brother, sources told Brunt.

The family had travelled down from their home in the Grimsby area overnight and had picked up Andrews in a taxi before being driven to the hotel.

Brunt said it is believed the taxi driver recognised Andrews and tipped off the police.

Police believe she had been sleeping rough since absconding from the jail and had only been in the hotel for a short time before she was found by officers.

A Prison Service spokesman confirmed she would now be placed in a closed prison where she will face either a criminal prosecution for escaping or an internal adjudication in jail in front of a visiting judge.

Since being recaptured, relatives of her victim have renewed their criticism of the decision to allow Andrews to be kept in an open prison.

They have also demanded that her eligibility for release on parole in 2012 be re-examined.

Mr Cressman's brother, Rick Cressman, 58, said: "She must go back to a closed prison, and this should have an effect on her future parole situation.

"That date should now be questioned.

"I would like to meet Jack Straw because I think there are deeper questions and issues which come out of this.

"For instance, why was she in an open prison after just eight and a half years? What are we playing at?"

Andrews, who was the Duchess of York's dresser for nine years, was jailed for 12 years for murdering Mr Cressman at their home in Fulham, south west London, in 2001.

She was ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years after a jury at the Old Bailey accepted that she had killed him in revenge because he refused to marry her.
