Thieves in Cleveland, Ohio, stole an undertaker's hearse from a crematorium - with a corpse still inside.

They dumped the body but left a note when they abandoned the vehicle so police could find it, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The corpse had been left in a bag on a medical trolley inside the vehicle in a locked building at the Greenfiield crematorium.

Police received an early morning call from a resident complaining the vehicle had been dumped in his driveway.

The crematory had reported the theft and the missing body - so police expected to find it still inside the vehicle.

Instead, officers found the handwritten note describing where the body had been left, at an intersection two miles away.

They quickly found the body which was then retrieved by crematorium workers.

Police believe the hearse may have been used to haul away computer equipment which was also stolen from the crematorium.

Jim Murphy, president of the Schulte and Mahon-Murphy Funeral Home, said the corpse had not been damaged: "Everything is fine," he said. "No harm done."

The Greenfield crematorium has apologised to the family of the dead person. No arrests have yet been made.
