Strikeforce may not have the roster to compete with UFC, but its ingenuity generally make these cards a must look. Since the promotion bought much of the EliteXC roster and partnered with Showtime in February of 2009, the fight cards have consistently delivered. That same outside-the-box thinking also made it possible to work with DREAM's roster and set up some good fights in the U.S. and Japan. If current strap holder Jake Shields bolts and vacates the title, Coker and Showtime sound like they're ready to take a page out of Japan's book by putting together an eight-man middleweight tournament
Cage Potato is all fired up and so are we. Showtime has already shown it can be done in the maddening world of boxing. The network's Super Six Boxing Classic has been excellent. There's plenty of options out there at 185 pounds to put together some intriguing matchups. These are some of the names:
Nick Diaz
Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza
Jason Miller
Tim Kennedy
Dan Henderson
Robbie Lawler
Winner of Cung Le vs. Scott Smith
Winner of Jorge Santiago vs. Kazuo Misaki
Hector Lombard, Frank Shamrock, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Paulo Filho and Melvin Manhoef could also be considered. CP does get a bit overzealous when suggesting that like in Japan, the semifinals and finals could be held on the same night. If the event goes down in the United States, it's unlikely that there's a legitimate state commission that would allow that to happen. That's OK. It's still a great event even if it takes 9-12 months to complete.
Shields, the current Strikeforce middleweight champ, has been rumored to be splitting for the UFC soon.
