A crimson velvet robe of state worn by Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation in 1953 is the highlight of a new exhibition coinciding with the summer opening of Buckingham Palace in London.

The robe, which has a five metre-train and is on public display for the first time, features alongside dresses, hats, a tiara and even the saddle the queen used at Trooping The Colour, her annual birthday parade, until 1986.

The display also includes unusual gifts presented to the queen on visits, including a London Underground station sign saying "Buckingham Palace".

The exhibition, "The Queen's Year", runs at the palace during its annual summer opening from July 27 to October 1.
