Aptosid 2010-02, codenamed Keres, has been released. The name may be unfamiliar, but underneath you'll find the well known Linux distro sidux. Aptosid continues where sidux left off and users can seamlessly upgrade from one to the other.

"Now that aptosid has opened its gates, we have the pleasure to announce the immediate availability of the aptosid 2010-02 "Κῆρες" release," the official announcement (http://aptosid.com/index.php?module=news&func=display&sid=8) read.

"Aptosid is created by the same team of volunteers developing software under the Debian Free Software Guidelines and continues what has been started in November 2006 under the name 'sidux'," it continued.

"Aptosid is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hardware and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with aptosid' own packages and scripts," the release notes read.

Aptosid 2010-02 comes with either the KDE desktop environment, by default, or, alternatively, with XFCE, both in either 32-bit or 64-bit flavors. Thanks to its Debian base, the hardware requirements are rather low and Aptosid supports a decent number of platforms.

New in Aptosid 2010-02 is the latest Linux kernel 2.6.35.4 and KDE SC 4.4.5. Unfortunately, KDE 4.5 hasn't made it yet, despite being out a few weeks, but will probably be offered as an upgrade soon.

The older version is still being offered because Debian sid, on which Aptosid is based, has reached the package freeze in preparation for Debian Squeeze.

The new Linux kernel offers support for power-saving features for AMD and Intel video cards. Aptosid also comes with better support for wireless networking cards.

Other packages available in Aptosid 2010-02 include X.Org 7.5, X.Org Server 1.7.7 and Iceweasel (Firefox) 3.5.12.
