IDG News Service - Advanced Micro Devices has lowered its revenue forecast for the third quarter due to weak demand for laptops in Western Europe and North America, the company said Thursday.

AMD expects revenue for the quarter ending Sept. 25 to be down 1% to 4% from the prior quarter, when its revenue was $1.65 billion.

After record PC shipments in the first two quarters, laptop and desktop PC shipments have slowed down, affecting sales of microprocessors.

Dell said last month that it had seen demand for consumer PCs start to weaken in the latter part of the second quarter. Research firms project that PC shipments will continue to grow, but at a slower rate than they previously expected.

Earlier this week AMD launched some desktop chips at relatively low prices in a move to boost its sales and apply pricing pressure to Intel.

AMD is due to report its full third-quarter earnings on Oct. 14.
