Google Street View has captured images of two dead bodies in Brazil only days after launching in the country.

The pictures have been removed from Google Maps website, but not before they were copied by Brazilian online news portal G1 and numerous other news websites.

One image shows a body covered by black plastic on a street corner in Belo Horizonte, as police hold back a crowd of onlookers.

The second picture shows a body lying at the edge of a major avenue in Rio de Janeiro as cars drive past, but with no police or other bystanders visible.

Google said the image will be removed or distorted so that the body is not obvious, G1 reported.

Crime is a major issue in Brazil, particularly in larger cities, with murder, carjacking and armed assault common offences, according to the Overseas Security Advisory Council.

United Nations statistics reveal there were 48,000 homicides recorded in Brazil in 2007, down from a peak of 51,000 in 2003.

Google Street View, which allows users to take virtual tours of cities around the world, launched in Brazil last Thursday.

Brazil is the first South American country to have the service.
