CRUX 2.7 has been released bringing updated packages and several changes to the minimalistic Linux distro. The kernel and toolchain have been updated to recent versions. There are also changes to the way packages are compressed and an image for USB drives is now available for download, besides the regular ISO image.

"To save space, all packages shipped with the image are compressed with xz, which requires a new version of pkgutils. A gz compressed package of pkgutils has been placed the /tools subdirectory," Tilman Sauerbeck explained in the release notes.

"Besides the usual ISO image, an image suitable for USB thumbdrives is available from our download mirrors," he announced.

"Important libraries have been updated to new major versions, which are not ABI compatible with the old versions. We strongly advise against manually updating to CRUX 2.7 via ports, since these changes will temporarily break the system," he added.

Libraries and packages that break compatibility are libgmp, libmpfr, OpenSSL, libjpeg and libpng. Support for the glitz backed is no longer included in the Cairo libraries.

Highlights of CRUX 2.7:

· Linux kernel 2.6.35.6;
· glibc 2.12.1;
· GCC 4.5.1;
· binutils 2.20.1;
· Xorg 7.5;
· Xorg server 1.9.0;
· ACL has been added;
· BtrFS-progs has been included;
· NFSv4 support is now available in nfs-utils;
· Portmap has been removed.

About CRUX

CRUX is aimed at experienced Linux users who want full control over their operating system and for those who don't mind their hands dirty.

Users have to compile their own kernel, partition the hard-drives and do most of the preparation work before install themselves. In return they get a highly customized system with very little excess 'fat.'
