Ubuntu Rescue Remix 10.10 has been released. The latest release of the rescue and computer forensics Linux distro, as the name implies, is based on the most recent Ubuntu 10.10. Ubuntu Rescue Remix (URR) 10.10 comes with the same simple command-line environment and updated packages.
"Version 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) of the very best Free-Libre Open-Source data recovery software toolkit based on Ubuntu is out. Same toolkit - updated infrastructure," Andrew Zajac, the creator of URR, announced. (http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/node/519)
"This release of Ubuntu-Rescue-Remix features a full command-line environment with up-to-date versions of the most powerful free/libre open-source data recovery software including GNU ddrescue, Photorec, The Sleuth Kit and Gnu-fdisk," he explained.
URR 10.10 keeps things simple. It comes with a bare-bones but powerful command line environment for those that know what they're doing and how to get the most out of the tools included in the distro.
The ISO can be burned to a CD, but you can also use an USB drive if you'd rather not waste a CD, or if you don't or can't use an optical drive.
You can create a bootable USB drive with URR via the USB Startup Disk Creator that comes with Ubuntu. The developers recommend PendriveLinux if you're using Windows.
By default, URR 10.10 comes with just the command like environment. If you're more comfortable with full desktop, you can grab the "ubuntu-rescue-remix-tools" from the dedicated PPA repository, which comes with the graphical versions of the forensics and rescue tools.
This package can be installed on any existing Ubuntu system. Here's the sources.list line for the full desktop metapackage:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/arzajac/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
You'll also have to authenticate the source by running:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys BDFD6D77
Finally, just install the "ubuntu-rescue-remix-tools" package and you're all set.
