FX president John Landgraf has revealed that the network chose to end Rescue Me on September 6 out of sensitivity to the victims of 9/11.
The final episode of the firefighter drama, which deals with the emotional aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, will air the week before the tenth anniversary of the tragedy.
"It seemed appropriate not to air it on the day because there are more solemn and appropriate things to do on the day," Landgraf said. "The weeks surrounding the day seemed to be the appropriate place to do it."
According to PA, Landgraf - who said that the show's ending would deal with the theme of catharsis - described the drama as "a real milestone" for FX, adding: "It's hard to find that kind of a show."
