The Zimbra 7 cloud collaboration suite has been released. All major components of the platform have been made available at the same time which will be the norm moving forward. VMware Zimbra Collaboration Server, as well as the Zimbra Collaboration Appliance and Zimbra Desktop, have all been updated along with the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Open Source Edition.
Zimbra offers a cloud-based email, calendar and collaboration suite for enterprises. The Zimbra Collaboration Server, formerly known as Collaboration Suite, is available for all major Linux distributions and is aimed at cloud environments in particular.
"VMware Zimbra 7 features new data sharing capabilities, expanded calendaring and search functionality, and upgraded management features for both IT and end-users," VMware announced.
"With this update, Zimbra is further optimized for both the casual and power-user, establishing a platform for a next-generation workspace within the VMware End-User Computing vision," it added.
Zimbra 7 brings a number of new features across all of the products in the suite. There is now a Scheduling Wizard which aims to simplify the task of creating new events, by automatically checking for a date and time when all those invited can attend.
Emails and calendar events can now be restored even if they have been deleted by a user. A copy of each entry will be kept on the servers so users can retrieve anything they thought they no longer needed.
Another important update, especially for those collaborating on documents and files, there is now a file versioning feature which enable users to edit files without having to worry about overwrites or keeping track of multiple versions.
"VMware Zimbra continues to be the fastest-growing enterprise collaboration solution -- now with more than 66 million paid mailboxes and more than 200,000 organizations using VMware Zimbra as their next-generation collaboration platform of choice," Jim Morrisroe, vice president of Zimbra Products at VMware, wrote.
