S.H.I.E.L.D. Will Be More Joss Whedon-y, Less Comic Book-y, Says Star Ming-Na

Now that the cast of Joss Whedon‘s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show is all assembled (did you think I’d stop using that joke? I won’t.), we’ve been waiting to hear more about what the show will be like. And now, courtesy of star Ming-Na, aka Agent Melinda May, we have our first clue.
Said the actress, “I don’t think he’s going to base it as much on the comic. This is going to be sort of like his own thing with Stan Lee. I’d rather take it fresh from his point of view.”
Unsurprising. Aside from Agent Coulson, the show’s main characters are all never-before-seen in Marvel comics (or movies, for that matter). And is there a more Whedonesque character than Skye, a young woman “slightly obsessed with superhero culture… [who is] edgy and can out-talk anyone with her unflappable nature“?
Ming-Na also shared her research process, which involves “watching every single thing that [Whedon has] ever done.” Jealous.
The Avengers was already pretty Whedonesque stylistically—banter a’plenty, plus the death (or “death”) of fan-favorite Coulson, even though that wasn’t Whedon’s idea—so it looks like S.H.I.E.L.D. will just be taking things to the next level.
What do you think? Are you glad that Whedon is returning more to his roots, or do you take this step away from comics as a negative? We know Ming-Na approves:
Ming-Na concluded that at the end of the day, the word “excited” doesn’t even cover her current feelings towards “S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Ecstatic, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious — yeah, that might cover it,” she said.
