The celebrity inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame was announced recently as Donald Trump will join Mick Foley, Bob Backlund, Trish Stratus and Bruno Sammartino in the class of 2013.
Donald Trump has been involved with WWE as early as 1988 and continued to appear with the company as recently as WrestleMania 23. His contributions to the company make this induction an easy choice by WWE.
In 1988 and 1989, Trump hosted WrestleManias III and IV respectively at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Other than Trump Plaza, only Madison Square Garden, LA Sports Arena, Rosemont Horizon and Arrowhead Pond held more than one WrestleMania.
One fact about the relationship between Trump and WWE that one may not realize is that Trump Plaza hosted the 1991 WBF Championship, which was owned by WWE.
In what was one of the most famous and impactful appearances by Trump, Bobby Lashley faced Umaga in a hair versus hair match at WrestleMania 23. If Umaga won, Trump would have his head shaved. Unfortunately for Mr. McMahon, Umaga lost to Lashley and thus the chairman’s head was shaved bald.
Just like other situations in the past, McMahon used this occurrence in a storyline feud that he began with Lashley. Mr. McMahon would eventually defeat Lashley for the ECW Championship. McMahon received help from his son Shane and Umaga.
Trump would make more appearances here and there for WWE after WrestleMania 23. In June 2009, McMahon announced that he had sold WWE Raw to Trump. This would lead to a commercial-free episode and a full refund to the people who purchased tickets to the show. McMahon bought back Raw one week later.
Like McMahon, Trump is a billionaire and great businessman. Both billionaires created television programs in which they starred in at points. It made sense for McMahon to bring Trump into WWE at times as not only are they friends, but they also share the same catchphrase. “You’re Fired” was made popular by Trump on his hit reality television show The Apprentice.
It should not surprise anyone to see Trump entering the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame. McMahon is notorious for inducting friends and celebrities who have been involved with the company. Like Mike Tyson, Trump has been involved with the show of shows, WrestleMania. In fact, one can argue that of any celebrity, Trump was involved with the most number of WrestleManias.
Now the questions can begin as to who will induct Donald Trump into the WWE Hall of Fame in April. The favorite has to be Mr. McMahon. Bobby Lashley is another possibility, but he was only involved with Trump during the WrestleMania 23 feud with Umaga and Mr. McMahon.
Based on his contributions to WWE, such as hosting multiple WrestleMania events, his involvement in storylines and his friendship with Mr. McMahon, Donald Trump will be the latest inductee into the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame.
