How about that main event featuring the seldom-used WWE Divas? No, seriously.
WWE decided that the main event of Monday's Raw would feature the Divas in a battle royal to determine the No. 1 contender for the championship title. The idea may sound perplexing at first, but scheduling the match before the real—and I'm using this term loosely—main event where Ryback and Cena cut a promo is inarguably the best decision WWE has made regarding the Divas division. It's inarguable for the sole reason that nothing has been with the division in the past few months. Kaitlyn, the WWE Divas Champion didn't even defend her title at WrestleMania.
The match's placement accomplishes a few things. For one, the Divas get a significant portion of the viewers who are anticipating Raw's closing segment. Considering that the Divas have had virtually no time to showcase their in-ring ability despite the expansion to three-hour show
And for those who mock the division for being nothing more than a regimented bathroom break, it gave them what they wanted as well. However, such a cynical viewpoint can only go only go so far if the Divas appear more often and are taken more seriously than they are now.
More importantly, there is a No. 1 contender for the WWE Divas Championship in AJ Lee, who managed to win the battle royal by playing dead until she and Layla were left. Nearing the ropes in danger of being eliminated, AJ bounced back and delivered a kick that would send Layla out of the ring. AJ's momentum has significantly declined since last summer but being aligned with current World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler will, at the very least, remind fans that the Divas have their own competitions. WWE still has something to work with.
WWE didn't simply put together two Divas for the sake of reminding fans that the division existed; they're pitting AJ Lee against champion Kaitlyn, who already have a history with which WWE can work use. In fact, this might be the only story with enough depth in the division to effectively set up a title match. The past feud between Kaitlyn and Tamina Snuka was entertaining, if only for the fact that Divas were able to showcase a glimpse of the heavyweight aspect their male counterparts display on occasion.
If this becomes more frequent, the Divas will show fans that they matter. Here's hoping that this match is simply not a one-off thing to impress the London crowd.
