The Rock Open To WWE Return If Money & Match Feels Right
Could he return at WrestleMania 31?
There’s a huge feature article today by The Hollywood Reporter about the wrestler turned actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It’s an article that covers a lot of things in his career as it goes over a lot of the same stories that most wrestling fans have heard about how his family was poor growing up despite the fact that they were in the wrestling business. His football career failed, so he went into wrestling and within a few years of being in WWE was main eventing WrestleMania.
The most interesting part of the article was about a WWE return. Apparently the 42 year old hasn’t ruled out the possibility of one more match even though the last time he was in a WWE ring he suffered a torn groin.
He says that the scale of his return would have to equal or exceed his last match in 2013 both as an event and a payday. In other words, he’s not taking a discount. Why should he? He commands well over $10 million for every movie he’s in and in 2013 he was the highest grossing actor in the world, so he can ask for and get whatever he wants at this point.
It will be interesting to see if WWE is willing to bring him back in 2015 for a possible WrestleMania 31 match or a story leading up to it. He has spoken about wanting to work with his cousin Roman Reigns, who is an ascending star in WWE that will likely be a WWE Champion within the next year. There are also matchups with guys like Brock Lesnar or The Undertaker that could be appealing to him.
The other factor in bringing him back is the cost. While we don’t know how much WWE paid him to appear at WrestleManias 27, 28 and 29, it was likely in the millions of dollars. Since WWE is trying to save money by cutting talent and production costs they might be less willing to pay him the same amount of money to work one show. If he doesn’t work a match at WrestleMania 31 it’s likely that he’ll still be the main attraction at the 2015 Hall of Fame.
In other Rock related news, he’s releasing a second autobiography in the fall that doesn’t have a title at this point. You might recall his book The Rock Says back in 2000 although a lot of that was in career and really only covered the early years of wrestling career. It’s definitely a good time to do another book that hopefully is a lot more professional than that one was.
The Rock is at a point in his life where he can pick and choose what he wants. For WWE fans, the hope is that he will choose at least one more match. We’ll continue to update you on whether or not that will actually happen.
