BANGOR, Maine — John Cena fans were out in force Saturday night as the WWE made its debut at the Cross Insurance Center. Saturday marked the first time since March 2012 that the professional wrestling promotion has been in Bangor. The 2012 event was held in the Bangor Auditorium.

The main bout was a WWE Street Fight between the popular superstar Cena and Bray Wyatt, leader of the Wyatt Family. Despite being outnumbered three to one, Cena was able to come out on top after a nearly 40-minute fight that featured throws, kicks and a collapsible table or two.

“It was a long match, good,” said 13-year-old Zachary Noyes from Prentiss, Maine. “I’m happy Cena won.”

Noyes and his mother joined a number of other families from around the state who came to Bangor to see their heroes brawl.

Although the result of the main event was a popular one, there were those in the audience who wanted to see Wyatt defeat Cena, who also won his match in 2012. Cheers of “Cena sucks!” were met with a chorus of “Never give up!” as Wyatt looked like more than a match for Cena for most of the bout. In the end, Cena gained a popular victory via submission.

Other notable matches included a classic Russia vs. U.S.A. bout, as well as a Fan’s Choice match where the fans had to vote for the contestants to either have a regular match or a dance-off. In the end, fans chose a match between Damien Sandow and The Great Khali.

Sandow was quick to antagonize the crowd, who supported Khali.

“I’ve been booed in the biggest cities in the country,” Sandow said. “You guys are just a bunch of cheap Canadians!”

The Great Khali came away victorious, much to the joy of the audience.

This match was followed by a fight between the Russian, Rusev, and Tampa, Florida, native Big E. Both wrestlers entered the ring bearing the flags of their respective nations, eliciting chants of “U.S.A! U.S.A!” among those in the audience.

“You’re greedy, and fat, and impotent. You can’t blame your president,” said Lana, Rusev’s manager, who addressed the audience before the fight.

Although Big E dominated most of the fight, Rusev came back to win by submission. This caused a sea of boos through the audience as the triumphant Rusev left the ring.

“[There’s] no doubt [the WWE] look[s] forward to coming back [to Bangor] in the near future.” said ring announcer Justin Roberts as the event came to a close.
