Wrestling a family affair for WWE’s Paige

Over the phone, WWE Diva Paige doesn’t sound all that menacing.

But don’t let that purr fool you. She’s a maneater, or make that woman eater, in the ring.

There’s a family tradition to uphold for the 21-year-old Norwich, England, native. Both of Saraya-Jade Bevis’ parents were professional wrestlers, and so are her two older brothers.

“Yeah, the whole family are hardcore wrestlers,” Paige said from her training facility in Orlando, Fla. “I guess it was inevitable I would become a wrestler, even if I didn’t want to.”

Her dad, Ian Bevis, who goes by the ring name of Ricky Knight, runs a training facility and wrestling promotion business in England, the World Association of Wrestling. Paige, who takes her ring name from the character Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan) on the TV show Charmed even wrestled and defeated her own mother in a promotional match.

In 2012, Britain’s Channel 4 featured the wrestling Bevis family in a documentary.

WWE’s Summerslam Heatwave Tour hits Windsor’s WFCU Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $16.75 to $96.75 at the door, or at wfcu-centre.com.

Paige is part of the Divas bill and will be taking on Canadian wrestler Natalia.

“I’ve wrestled her before and she is very, very good. Natalia is one of the WWE women I look up to.”

Paige’s pro career got an early start when she was just 13.

“My dad was short one girl one day and said, ‘Hey, you want to jump in here?’ I was always quite scared of it, but the bug bit me.”

And there went her childhood dreams of being a veterinarian.

She auditioned for WWE after rising through the ranks of women’s wrestling in Britain, where she competed under the name Britani Knight. Earlier this year, Paige captured the DIVA championship only to lose it a few months later to rival and arch-enemy AJ Lee.

Not that she’s bragging, but Paige said her signature move is the Paige Tap Out, or PTO, which she uses as her finishing manoeuvre. She plans to put Natalia into that frightening position at the WFCU.
