Melissa Rivers, 46, and son Cooper Endicott, 13, tearfully watched as the coffin containing their beloved mother and grandmother, Joan Rivers, 81, was taken away to a New Jersey crematorium after a private service in New York City. Melissa remained the epitome of strength throughout the emotional scene, and Cooper stood by his mother’s side as she kissed her mother’s coffin in a touching goodbye. So sad.
Joan Rivers Coffin: First Pics & Video Revealed
Joan’s coffin was taken out of the Frank E. Campbell funeral home in New York City and to a crematorium in New Jersey on Sept. 6, reports the New York Post. In the video, after the eight pallbearers gently laid Joan’s coffin inside the hearse, Melissa shook all their hands before walking up to her mother’s coffin.
In the few moments Melissa and Cooper spent with Joan, Melissa looked visibly upset and kissed the coffin. Cooper had his arm around his mother the whole time.
Joan tragically passed away on Sept. 4 after going into cardiac arrest on Aug. 28 during a routine throat surgery. An interview from 1985 recently revealed that Joan suffered from heart arrhythmias, but the comedienne’s autopsy results were inconclusive.
A larger funeral for the comedy legend will be held Sept. 7 at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan. The comic had previously detailed in her 2012 book I Hate Everyone… Starting With Me exactly what she wanted for her funeral.
Joan wanted all the lights, cameras, action of Hollywood, and Melissa is doing everything she can to make her mother’s final wish come true. Joan will have a red carpet at her funeral, a source told Us Weekly. Joan’s family and friends will walk the carpet before it is buried alongside her.
The entire video of Melissa’s tearful goodbye to her mother Joan is below.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Joan’s family and friends during this time.
