This week saw the final day of operations for the Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City, NJ. The casino was a sponsor for Wrestlemanias 4 and 5 in 1988 and 1989 when the event was held next door at what is know known as Boardwalk Hall. It began a long relationship between WWE and Donald Trump as well, leading to his WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2013. The partnership with Trump Plaza also opened up the door for a lot of weekend activities in association with Wrestlemania (a 5K run, a Wrestlemania breakfast event, signings, etc.) so that families could come to the events and spend the weekend in AC. Those events set WWE on the path to what is now the week-long Wrestlemania AXXESS. WWE's Basil Devito went into a lot of detail about the Trump partnership with Wrestlemania in his 2001 book on Wrestlemania. The actual venue where the shows were held, Boardwalk Hall, operates independently of the casino and is not shutting down. NBC News in NYC featured coverage of the casino shutting down (and Donald Trump's reaction) at this link.
