Hulk Hogan did not come to Nigeria, says Commander
CONTRARY to the belief that the wrestler, who featured in the Commonwealth/Africa Unifying Championship recently held in Aba, Abia State, was U.S.A’s Hulk Hogan, the organisers of the event have identified the matsman as Mr. Wrestling.
Recently, the news that Hulk Hogan was in Nigeria went viral in the social media, prompting the organisers of the championship to seek to set the records straight.
Speaking to The Guardian at the weekend, Universal Professional Wrestling Federation (UPWF) World Heavyweight Champion, Osita Offor, also known as De Ultimate Commander, described the Commonwealth Championship, which featured wrestlers from Canada, Britain, South Africa and some West African countries, as one of the best competitions he has seen in this part of the world.
But he added that wrestling fans should not be deceived by the resemblance between Hulk Hogan and Mr. Wrestling.
According to Commander, “Hulk Hogan is an American wrestling icon, who is enjoying his semi-retirement from the sport after many years of great success.
“Mr. Wrestling is a South African, who looks quite like Hulk Hogan and it is easy to take him as the American. But they are two different people.
“A lot of Nigerians took photograph with Mr. Wrestling, just as he signed autographs for them after the championship in Aba, but it is fair that they know that he is a champion from South Africa.”
He added that the Aba championship was strictly for wrestlers from the Commonwealth countries, ‘who are using wrestling to draw the world’s attention to the ills of the society.’
According to the De Commander, there are plans to take the message to other parts of the country to sensitise Nigerians on the need for a peaceful co-existence among the different peoples of the nation.
He said, “I want to thank Abia State Governor, Dr. Theodore Orji and the people of the state for the reception and support they gave us at the championship.
“The wrestlers saw a Nigeria different from what they had been fed by the media and they are eager to come back to the country. Competitions like the Commonwealth Championship give foreigners first hand experience of the country such that they are in good position to educate their compatriots on the real situation in Nigeria.
