WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley posted the following message on his Facebook account regarding Wade Barrett’s King of the Ring victory:
I’M AFRAID I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS
Sometimes in life, just as in #WWE, breaks are what you make of them. For many years, a coronation at #KOTR usually led to bigger and better things, for a long, prestigious list of WWE talent – including the crowning of Kings who went on to become WWE or World Heavyweight champion – Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H (who beat a scrappy, young Mankind in the final) the final round in 1997 .Austin cut one of the promos of his, or any other wrestler’s lifetime on the heels of his victory – and went on to do pretty good for himself. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty well.
Over time, however, the coronation seemed to have lost some of its luster – until 2006, when Booker T took the idea of King and just RAN with it! Ran with it like it was the most important figurative handoff in the history of the Royal Coronations. That break was exactly what Booker made of it. A victory that could have been soon forgotten became, instead, a milestone of his Hall of Fame career – to the point where many (including me address him as “King Bookah” long after we’d seen the last of his royal scepter.
Wade Barrett has that same chance to make his KOTR ring victory a long-lived and wonderfully annoying long-term cornerstone of his career, If injuries are, as rumored, going to cut his career short, I hope he runs with this gimmick like Forrest Gump with a pigskin tucked underneath his arm.
Run, Barrett run!
Who, in your opinion, is the greatest King of the Ring of all time? Why?
