On Saturday night, Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp revealed that Invicta Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg will officially take the first step towards fighting Ronda Rousey in her next fight.
Knapp stated at the Invicta FC 14 post-fight press conference that Cyborg will indeed compete at a 140-pound catchweight bout at the next Invicta event in November, however an opponent for Cyborg has yet to be announced.
Cyborg (14-1, 1 NC) was told outright by the UFC that the only way she can get a fight against Rousey is if the bout is for Rousey’s UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship, which means the fight must be contested at 135 pounds, a weight Cyborg has never fought at before.
Cyborg, real name Cristiane Justino, will look to fight at her lowest weight in her next bout, as she will attempt to cut down to 140 pounds, half way towards the 135 pound requirement she must meet to face Rousey inside the Octagon.
If everything goes smooth and Cyborg fights — and wins — at 140 pounds in her Invicta fight in November, there remains the possibility that the UFC will force her to compete in one final fight at 135 pounds in Invicta before bringing her over to compete against Rousey in the long-awaited women’s MMA super fight.
Meanwhile, Rousey will have to retain her title for the super fight to stay in tact, as she defends the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship against undefeated contender and former multiple-time women’s boxing champion Holly Holm at UFC 193 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia on November 15, 2015.
