WWE announced Friday that they will be returning to the Alamodome in San Antonio Texas on January 29th 2017 for the 30th annual Royal Rumble event. In addition to being the thirtieth Royal Rumble, this mark’s the 20-year-anniversary since WWE broke Alamodome attendance records with the Royal Rumble in 1997. The original attendance claimed by WWE for the ’97 ‘Rumble headlined by Shawn Michaels and Psycho Sid for the WWE Championship was 60,525. The overall record for the building, however, is 73,086, which was set by George Strait in 2013. Given WWE’s affinity for inflating audience figures, it’s very likely that the 2017 30th anniversary Royal Rumble will break any and all previous held records.
Triple H, who retained his Intercontinental Championship over Goldust in the opening match of Royal Rumble 1997, tweeted the following regarding WWE’s return to the historic stadium:
A return 20 years in the making...
January 29, 2017 the #RoyalRumble returns to San Antonio @Alamodome. You never know who will show up...
