It was surprising for many to see The New Day lose the SmackDown Live Tag Team Championships to the Usos at SummerSlam considering that the trio only won the titles a few weeks ago at the Battleground PPV.
However, if some recent reports are to be believed their loss at the PPV is a part of a big and long term plan WWE has for the now former Tag Team Champions.
According to report from Wrestling Observer Newsletter WWE wants to establish the team of Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods as the “greatest tag team of all-time” and for this, the officials plan for the trio to hold the Tag Titles for more times than any other team in the history of the company.
The current record is held by The Dudley Boyz who have had a total of 10 Tag Team title reigns in the company and Meltzer speculates that the New Day’s loss was an effort to put the team a step closer to this record.
Although it’s worth mentioning here that including their recent run, the former Champions have held the Tag Team titles for a total of 3 times, so if the company wants them to break the record, then they have a long road ahead of them.
