WWE officials wanted to have a surprise for those fans who attended Sunday’s (September 16, 2018) Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event in San Antonio, Texas at the AT&T Center that aired on the WWE Network.
As noted, Brock Lesnar returned during the Universal Title match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman that saw WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley serve as the special guest referee. Lesnar would kick in the door then attacked both stars with a piece of a broken table followed by hitting the F-5.
Dave Meltzer stated on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that the reason Lesnar made his return is to set up a match at the upcoming WWE show in Saudi Arabia on Friday, November 2nd where he’ll be wrestling.
It was noted that the finish of this match was always part of the plan as WWE made a deal with the former WWE Universal Champion that was not put together at the last minute but rather had been in the works for a little while.
The longtime pro wrestling journalist noted in an article on MMAFighting that despite the fact Lesnar has been in the USADA testing pool while preparing for his UFC return, he has not yet signed a deal with UFC. Lesnar is set to fight Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight title in January.
As of this writing, there’s no word yet on if Lesnar will face Reigns for the title in the main event or it would be a three-way match involving Strowman in Saudi Arabia. We should get clarification about that on this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW.
