John Cena was making the rounds last week to promote his children’s book when he was stopped by Adam Glyn for a quick interview where he talked about his pro wrestling career and status with the WWE.
Cena was asked about slowing down his wrestling career, which he responded by talking about how this is the most healthy that he’s felt in his life as he dropped 20 lbs and started doing some stretching techniques over in China where he’s filming a movie with Jackie Chan. He added that his body actually feels great but did note as a full disclosure that he can’t do “the full demanding schedule at 41 years old” as they do it every day and that wrestling is “young man’s game.”
Despite his previous statements specifically during his feud with The Rock in 2012 and 2013 that he will never leave the WWE, he is no longer a full-time star but rather working selective matches when his movie schedule allows him. Cena had a message to those fans criticizing him for going back on what he had started years ago.
The former WWE Champion stated that he’s old and “I’m 41 and performing 310 times a year isn’t what’s best for my overall health.” He stated that he wants to be able to run the street at 80 instead of hobbling around and is currently in a stage of his life where he needs to think long-term.
Cena added that this doesn’t mean he’s leaving the WWE as he would never do that because it’s his home but that this decision is probably the best play for him.
